What Are the Different Types of Codes and How Do They Work?

Transponder Codes

When a transponder is interrogated it sends out an encoded signal that is accompanied by a four-digit code. This signal, known as a SQUAWK Code is used to identify aircraft on radar screens. It is also used to send specific messages to the air traffic control system in the event of an emergency or to inform controllers of changes in weather conditions. Squawk codes are frequently utilized to communicate with ATC in situations where the pilot is unable to communicate via radio. They are very important to ensure safe flying.

Each aircraft has a transponder, which responds to radar interrogation by displaying an identifier code. This enables ATC to locate an aircraft on a busy screen. The codes are arranged through statistical analysis to minimize the possibility that two aircraft with the same SQUAWK codes will be in the same area at any one time.


A transponder key is equipped with an embedded chip which contains the ID code. If the security light on a vehicle appears, it indicates that the ID code of the key doesn't match the code stored in the computer. When this happens, the car's immobilizer will be disabled and it will not start until a new key is used. PIN Codes

A PIN code is a collection of numbers (usually four or six digits) that can be used to gain access to the device or system or service. VIN Numbers

VIN numbers are used to identify vehicles and provide an abundance of information about them. VIN numbers are unique to every vehicle on the planet and are not applicable to alien vehicles (or whatever). The 17 numbers of the VIN code are a combination of numbers and letters that can be decoded to reveal vital information about your vehicle or truck.

Then, the entire VIN is translated back into its original form by multiplying each digit's weight by 11. If the result is the same as the check number then the VIN is valid.
